Medicare Part B: Medical Insurance

What Is Medicare Part B?

Medicare Part B covers the medical services you use most often, including doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. At Arcuri & Associates Assurance Agency, we sit down with you face-to-face to explain exactly what’s included and how Part B works alongside the rest of your Medicare coverage.

Serving clients across Columbiana County, Mahoning County, and Northeastern Ohio, we provide ongoing education and support before, during, and after enrollment.

Who Needs Medicare Part B?

Most people should enroll in Part B when they first become eligible for Medicare. You may need Part B if you:

  • Want coverage for doctor visits, preventive care, and outpatient services
  • Don’t have other creditable health insurance (like employer coverage)
  • Want to avoid late enrollment penalties and gaps in coverage

How Much Does Part B Cost?

Unlike Part A, Medicare Part B always has a monthly premium. Costs for 2025 vary based on income but generally include:

  • Monthly Premium

Standard premium (set annually by Medicare)

  • Annual Deductible

A small yearly amount before coverage kicks in

  • Coinsurance

Typically 20% of Medicare-approved services after deductible

When Can You Enroll?

You can sign up for Part B during:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

7-month window around your 65th birthday

  • General Enrollment Period (GEP)

January 1 – March 31 (if you missed IEP)

  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

If you delayed Part B due to employer coverage

Important:  Delaying Part B without other creditable coverage can lead to lifetime penalties.

How Part B Fits Into Medicare

Part B works alongside Part A as the foundation of Original Medicare. Together, they cover hospital and medical needs. From there, you can:

  • Add a Part D Prescription Drug Plan
  • Enroll in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to cover costs Original Medicare doesn’t
  • Choose a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) that combines A, B, and often D

Most people combine Part A and Part B for Original Medicare, or choose a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) that includes Part A benefits.
