Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

What Is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and are designed to work with:

  • Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), many of those plans already include prescription drug coverage — but if you choose Original Medicare, you’ll likely need a standalone Part D plan.

Who Needs Medicare Part D?

You may want to enroll in a Part D plan if you:

  • Take prescription medications on a regular basis
  • Want to protect yourself from unexpected high drug costs
  • Have Original Medicare or a Medigap plan (since they don’t include drug coverage)
  • Want access to a wide network of pharmacies

How Much Does Part D Cost?

Costs for Part D vary by plan and location, but generally include:

  • Monthly Premium

Varies by plan, some as low as $0

  • Annual Deductible

Some plans have no deductible, others do

  • Copayments/Coinsurance

Your share of prescription drug costs

  • Extra Help Program

Income-based assistance to lower drug costs

Important: If you don’t enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible and don’t have other creditable coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty.
