Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

What Are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement Plans, also called Medigap, help cover the costs that Original Medicare (Parts A & B) doesn’t pay. These include:

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles

Medigap plans are offered by private insurance companies and work alongside Original Medicare. They’re especially valuable if you want predictable out-of-pocket costs and nationwide access to providers who accept Medicare.

Who Should Consider a Medigap Plan?

You may benefit from a Medicare Supplement Plan if you:

  • Have Original Medicare and want to reduce out-of-pocket expenses
  • Travel frequently or want nationwide provider access
  • Don’t want to worry about surprise bills from deductibles or coinsurance
  • Prefer the freedom to see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare

How Much Do Medigap Plans Cost?

Costs vary by plan type, location, and carrier, but generally include:

  • Monthly Premium

Higher than Medicare Advantage, but offer broader coverage

  • Out-of-Pocket Costs

Significantly reduced compared to Original Medicare alone

  • Guaranteed Renewal

As long as you pay your premium, your coverage cannot be dropped

When Can You Enroll?

The best time to buy a Medigap plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which lasts for six months starting the month you turn 65 and enroll in Part B. During this time:

  • You can enroll without medical underwriting
  • You’ll get the best plan options and prices

After this window, you may face higher premiums or limited availability.

How Medigap Fits Into Medicare

  • Original Medicare (A & B)

Medigap fills in the “gaps” for deductibles, copays, and coinsurance

  • Part D Prescription Drug Coverage

Must be added separately if you need it

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C)

You cannot have both a Medigap plan and a Medicare Advantage plan — it’s one or the other
